EPA Expands Carcinogenic Forever-Chemical Pesticide to Food Crops

The agency approved expanded use of bifenthrin, a PFAS pesticide the EPA classifies as a possible carcinogen, on kale, broccoli, coffee, and other foods—even as contamination spreads through U.S. waterways and farmland.

In late June 2026, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency quietly approved expanded uses for bifenthrin, a PFAS pesticide already classified by the agency itself as a “possible human carcinogen.” The new approvals allow bifenthrin to be sprayed on coffee, kiwifruit, peas, kale, and broccoli—crops that land on many American dinner tables.

The expansion came on June 30 alongside approvals for two additional PFAS pesticides, diflufenican and epyrifenacil. Just five days later, the Supreme Court handed pesticide manufacturers a major win by sharply curtailing Americans’ ability to sue over cancer warnings.

Bifenthrin isn’t new. It’s been used on U.S. farms for years, and it’s already one of the most widely detected insecticides in American streams, lakes, and rivers, often at levels exceeding aquatic safety thresholds. What’s new is the EPA’s decision to greenlight its use on a broader menu of food crops—effectively broadening the pathway from field to fork.

PFAS compounds—“forever chemicals” that don’t break down in soil or water—accumulate in crops and livestock. Once in soil, they persist indefinitely and can be taken up by crops and livestock alike. The contamination spreads. In California, bifenthrin and other PFAS pesticides contaminate roughly half of surface water and sediment samples tested, with nearly 70 million acres of U.S. farmland already potentially impacted by PFAS.

The EPA’s Forever-Chemical Loophole

The EPA’s position hinges on a narrow scientific interpretation. In a November 2025 “fact check,” the agency declared that single fully fluorinated-carbon compounds are not forever chemicals and pose no safety concern—a classification that environmental scientists dispute. This semantic difference allowed the agency to fast-track approvals.

But the disconnect is stark: the same EPA that approved bifenthrin for more foods classifies bifenthrin itself as a “possible human carcinogen.” That contradiction underscores a deeper problem: the revolving door between agriculture and regulation. Approvals landed just days after the Supreme Court limited liability for pesticide makers, leaving farmers and consumers with fewer legal protections.

What Farmers and Farmworkers Face

For farmers, this expands the chemicals in their soil and water. Farmworkers who handle bifenthrin-sprayed crops face direct exposure. For consumers, it means additional PFAS residues in staple foods—kale and broccoli are nutritious, but not if they’re vectors for carcinogens.

Across the country, regenerative and organic growers are already pushing back, concerned that PFAS pesticide runoff contaminates adjacent land and that regulatory capture lets chemical manufacturers set the rules. Meanwhile, PFAS testing of crops and soil won’t become mandatory until 2028—another gap where farmers and eaters are flying blind.

The Farmland Timeline

This expansion fits a troubling pattern: corporate seed consolidation that traps farmers in bought-and-sprayed cycles, rising PFAS food contamination that regulators have been slow to address, and dwindling legal recourse for harm. It’s a system designed to keep farmers applying bought chemicals on rented land, generating profits for agribusiness while costs and toxins accumulate on the farm.

The EPA’s move matters. It’s not a small tweak. It’s an expansion of poison in the soil and water that feeds this nation. And for farmers already drowning in debt and chemical costs, crushed by input expenses tied to corporate agriculture’s grip on the industry, it’s one more barrier to escape the treadmill.
