
EPA Approves PFAS 'Forever Chemicals' Despite Cancer Warnings
The agency green-lit three new toxic pesticides despite evidence one poses carcinogenic risk, escalating contamination of farmland and water across the country.
In a move that defies its own scientists’ warnings, the EPA has approved three new PFAS “forever chemical” pesticides for use on U.S. crops—including one the agency’s own researchers flagged as having “suggestive evidence of carcinogenic potential.”
The approvals, announced in July 2026, represent a sharp pivot from growing bipartisan alarm over PFAS contamination. The decision widens chemical manufacturers’ runway to deploy some of the planet’s most persistent and bioaccumulative compounds directly into the agricultural landscape.
The Science EPA Ignored
The most brazen approval: an expanded use for bifenthrin, a PFAS pesticide already classified as a “possible human carcinogen” by the agency. According to the Environmental Working Group’s May 2026 analysis, bifenthrin is already a ubiquitous problem. Nearly half of California’s surface water samples and over half of sediment samples tested positive for the chemical, with concentrations exceeding 80% in San Luis Obispo and Stanislaus counties.
More than 2.5 million pounds of PFAS pesticides are applied to California farmland annually. Add the new approvals and that volume will climb—at a moment when fertilizer prices and chemical input costs are already squeezing farmer margins.
The EPA’s own July 2026 draft guidance acknowledged the risks: the agency released protocols to help wastewater utilities and landowners reduce PFOA and PFOS exposure in biosolids. Yet at the same moment, it greenlit compounds that will generate precisely the contamination those guidance documents aim to contain.
Where PFAS Gets In
PFAS molecules bond so strongly they resist heat, water, and degradation—hence the “forever” nickname. When applied as pesticides, they leach into groundwater, persist in soil, and accumulate in the bodies of organisms that consume them. Communities of color in California have been disproportionately affected, with PFAS-contaminated pesticides sprayed near public supply wells in areas serving predominantly Latino and Black neighborhoods.
The health toll is still being mapped. PFOA and PFOS—legacy PFAS compounds now banned from many industrial uses—are linked to kidney cancer, testicular cancer, thyroid disease, liver damage, and immune suppression. The newer PFAS pesticides the EPA just approved haven’t undergone the same long-term epidemiological scrutiny, but they share the same chemical properties that make their predecessors dangerous.
Why the EPA Approved Them Anyway
The approval contradicts the EPA’s own May 2026 proposal to monitor 30 unregulated PFAS-type contaminants in drinking water. It signals a regulatory posture that oscillates: restrict PFAS on one front while enabling new PFAS on another.
Critics point to industry pressure and cost-benefit analyses that weigh farmer convenience and corporate profit against public health. The agency has long treated pesticide approvals as separate from water contamination enforcement—a compartmentalization that obscures the direct causal pipeline from farm spray to kitchen tap.
What Comes Next
The approvals will likely draw legal challenges, and several states are moving faster than the EPA. Twenty-nine states now have laws restricting certain foreign investments in agricultural land, and a handful are weighing pesticide restrictions of their own.
For farmers already caught between debt spirals and input costs, the approval offers a cheap chemical fix in the short term. The bill—paid by rural aquifers, downstream communities, and the body burden of those who work the land—will arrive later.
The resistance is growing. Regenerative agriculture advocates are pushing federal investment in soil health alternatives, which reduce pest pressure without synthetic chemistry. The USDA’s $700 million regenerative pilot program offers a counterweight—if it gets the funding and political cover to scale.
As food-safety concerns prompt new labeling requirements and scrutiny intensifies around chemical inputs in the food supply, the PFAS approval reveals a regulatory gap: agencies restrict pesticides’ market entry in some jurisdictions while approving their use in others. Until then, the EPA’s July decision stands: three more forever chemicals, hitting the soil and water of America’s breadbasket.
